After a 2016 earthquake destroyed much of Italyās Church of San Salvatore, conservators faced the impossible task of piecing together its shattered 15th-century frescoes. Alex Kachkine, a 25-year-old MIT engineer and hobbyist restorer, proposed a novel solution: AI-generated, ultra-thin printed āmasksā that overlay missing sections without permanently altering the original. The masks are reversible, giving viewers the sense of wholeness while preserving authenticity.
