🕵️ ESPIONAGE

Ex-Google Engineer Convicted of Stealing AI Trade Secrets to Launch Beijing Start-Up

The Recap: A federal jury in San Francisco convicted Linwei Ding, a former Google software engineer, of stealing artificial intelligence trade secrets to support a start-up venture in China. Prosecutors said Ding took thousands of confidential files tied to Google’s AI supercomputer systems before abruptly leaving the U.S. in January 2024. The case, reported by Tripp Mickle of The New York Times, underscores rising U.S.–China tensions over advanced technology and economic espionage.

Highlights:

  • A federal jury convicted Linwei Ding, a former Google engineer, on 14 counts of trade-secret theft and economic espionage tied to AI supercomputer technology on January 29, 2026.

  • Prosecutors said Ding stole 2,000+ pages of confidential files from Google’s internal network in 2022–2023 and uploaded them to a personal cloud account.

  • After quitting Google in January 2024 and flying to Beijing, Ding allegedly sought funding for a China-based start-up modeled on Google’s AI systems and applied to a state-backed talent program.

  • The conviction, which carries potential decades in prison, reflects intensified U.S. enforcement amid broader technology and AI rivalry with China.

Gurman Says Apple Relies Heavily on Anthropic for Internal AI Tools

Apple is deeply dependent on Anthropic’s AI technology for internal product development, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman. Gurman said Apple uses custom versions of Anthropic’s Claude models running on its own servers to power many internal tools.

The comments add context to Apple’s recent AI partnership with Google, suggesting that while Google Gemini will support consumer-facing features like Siri, Anthropic plays a larger behind-the-scenes role. Gurman said Apple initially pursued a formal deal with Anthropic, but talks collapsed over cost. The company ultimately signed a less expensive agreement with Google. → Read the full article here.
