LGND Raises $9M to Build the “ChatGPT for Earth” with Geospatial Intelligence

ChatGPT for Earth

LGND, a geospatial AI startup co-founded by Nathaniel Manning and Bruno Sánchez-Andrade Nuño, just raised $9 million to build what it calls “ChatGPT for the Earth.” The company uses vector embeddings—compressed summaries of spatial data—to help users extract insights from satellite imagery far more efficiently.

Instead of spending hundreds of thousands to train single-purpose models, LGND’s tech allows for broader, cheaper, and faster querying of complex environmental and geographic questions. Its enterprise app and API let users—from disaster planners to vacation seekers—ask smarter questions and get useful answers from Earth’s data deluge. → Read the full article here.

E.U. Lays Groundwork for A.I. Oversight with New Transparency and Safety Rules

E.U. Lays Groundwork for A.I. Oversight

The European Union has introduced new rules for general-purpose A.I. systems like ChatGPT, requiring companies to disclose training data sources, address copyright concerns, and assess risks to public safety. Though enforcement doesn’t begin until 2026, a voluntary “code of practice” starts this August, offering early compliance benefits.

The rules are part of the A.I. Act, Europe’s broad attempt to regulate powerful A.I. while maintaining its economic competitiveness. Critics say industry lobbying weakened the final version, and some major players remain undecided on participation. Still, the E.U. is positioning itself as a global standard-setter in A.I. governance—betting that safety and transparency can coexist with innovation. → Read the full article here.

Australian Scientists Use AI to Design Protein That Kills Drug-Resistant E. coli

Australian researchers have used AI to design a novel protein that targets and kills antibiotic-resistant E. coli—marking the country’s first success in AI-driven, ready-to-use protein creation. Published in Nature Communications, the study positions Australia alongside the U.S. and China in deploying AI to accelerate drug discovery.

The protein was developed using a new design platform that models Nobel laureate David Baker’s groundbreaking work and incorporates tools like Bindcraft and Chai. By cutting design time from years to seconds, the platform could revolutionize treatments for infections, cancer, and beyond—at a fraction of the cost. → Read the full paper here.

🤔 FRIDAY FACTS

GNoME Compressed 800 Years of Discovery Into One Study

In November 2023, Google DeepMind’s GNoME AI predicted 2.2 million new crystal structures—materials previously unknown to science. According to researchers, that’s equivalent to 800 years of human discovery at historical rates.

Rather than combing through chemical compositions and running labor-intensive simulations, GNoME leveraged deep learning to supercharge materials science. From that mountain of predictions, 380,000 of the most stable candidates were released publicly, offering a treasure trove for innovations in batteries, superconductors, and solar cells.

GNoME didn’t just accelerate the pace of discovery, it floored the accelerator and ripped the rearview mirror off.
