OpenAI’s $300B Funding Web: Circular Deals, Stock Swaps, and Data Center Bets

The Recap: Between 2019 and 2025, OpenAI secured tens of billions from Microsoft, SoftBank, NVIDIA, and others, then redirected much of it back into those same firms via cloud computing and chip purchases. The company’s highly circular financial model now involves over $300 billion in reciprocal deals, equity swaps, and speculative investments to fund data centers and secure AI infrastructure. While some investors hedge exposure, analysts warn that the structure could inflate a tech bubble, especially if AI development slows.
Highlights:
Microsoft invested $13 billion into OpenAI, which was largely spent on Microsoft’s Azure cloud services.
OpenAI signed $22 billion in cloud contracts with CoreWeave and received $350 million in its stock as part of the deal.
Oracle is building $300 billion in data centers for OpenAI, which will repay that amount over time through usage fees.
NVIDIA intends to invest up to $100 billion as it supplies 10 GW of GPU systems, and OpenAI’s pact with AMD gives it the right to buy ~10% of AMD at $0.01 per share.
Forward Future Takeaways:
OpenAI’s financing strategy resembles a closed loop of capital recycling, where multibillion-dollar bets on AI infrastructure flow back and forth between investors and providers. This financial innovation could accelerate AI progress, or amplify risk, depending on the market's trajectory. → Read the full article here.
♟️ STRATEGY
Google’s Vertically Integrated AI Strategy Gains Ground

Microsoft’s partnership model with OpenAI has driven over $2 trillion in value, anchored by a new deal giving it a 27% stake, 20% of OpenAI’s revenue, and rights to its technology until 2032. In return, OpenAI will spend about $250 billion on Microsoft’s cloud. This open, partnership-driven strategy contrasts with Google’s vertically integrated model, where it builds its own chips, models, and AI-powered products end-to-end.
After lagging early in the AI race, Google’s integrated approach is now paying off. Alphabet’s market value has surged $1 trillion in four months, search ad revenue is up 10% year-over-year, and Google Cloud is growing 30% annually. Its in-house TPUs have cut AI costs and attracted major customers like Anthropic. As Microsoft and OpenAI move to design their own chips, Google’s once-criticized vertical strategy now looks like a competitive advantage. → Read the full article here. (paywall)
