What Is the Singularity?
"This may turn out to be the most consequential fact about all of history so far. It is possible that we will have superintelligence in a few thousand days (!); it may take longer, but I'm confident we'll get there."
The idea of the technological singularity raises hopes and fears in equal measure. In the minds of many, the singularity refers to a future moment when artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence and ushers in a phase of uncontrollable technological progress. This turning point could fundamentally change humanity's understanding of technology, as AI would be able to self-improve and drive growth beyond human perception and control. But what exactly is behind this idea, and how realistic is the scenario of such a singularity?
The discussion about the Singularity is closely linked to the term “intelligence explosion”. This idea, which was formulated in the 1960s by mathematician I. J. Good, describes a kind of domino effect in which an AI becomes so intelligent that it is able to create even more intelligent AIs. This process could theoretically be exponential and produce a machine superintelligence that exceeds any human capacity. A central concept here is the so-called “seed AI”, a type of original AI that is equipped with the ability to self-improve and could therefore serve as the starting point for this rapid increase in intelligence.
Alan Turing, known as the father of modern computer science, laid the foundation for the discourse on the technological singularity with his work “Computing Machinery and Intelligence” (1950). He developed the Turing test, which defines a machine as “intelligent” if it can deceive a human by giving human-like answers. This concept inspired extensive research into AI capabilities and could bring the reality of the singularity closer.
The concept of singularity raises various philosophical and social questions: How would such a development affect human existence? Can machines really understand values and ethical principles, or does a superior AI threaten moral conflicts and ethical dilemmas that take us to the limits of our current systems? These questions are not only discussed by scientists, but also by transhumanists who see the singularity as an opportunity to overcome the limits of human nature.
In this text, I will explore the question of what is meant by the widely received concept of singularity. I will give a brief overview of the theoretical foundations, the hopes and the risks that such a scenario could entail.The following sections will therefore examine how realistic it is to reach the singularity, which technological developments could possibly lead us there and what effects could be expected on society and human self-image.
Different Concepts of Singularity
“One conversation centered on the ever accelerating progress of technology and changes in the mode of human life, which gives the appearance of approaching some essential singularity in the history of the race beyond which human affairs, as we know them, could not continue.”
The basic idea of the “intelligence explosion” is an intellectual concept developed by mathematician I. J. Good in the 1960s and refers to the possibility that an artificial intelligence might at some point be able to improve its own intelligence. This process could - theoretically - end in a kind of feedback loop, with each generation of AI systems developing the next one, which is then even more intelligent than the previous one.
An intelligence explosion would lead to the creation of a “superintelligent” AI that far surpasses human capabilities. This superintelligence could then make decisions autonomously and without human control and develop strategies that would be unpredictable and possibly uncontrollable for us. This is precisely what many people are afraid of when they regularly mention the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. Ultimately, the underlying feeling is one of powerlessness, of being at the mercy of others.
I. J. Good wrote about this moment in 1965:
"Let an ultraintelligent machine be defined as a machine that can far surpass all the intellectual activities of any man however clever. Since the design of machines is one of these intellectual activities, an ultraintelligent machine could design even better machines; there would then unquestionably be an 'intelligence explosion', and the intelligence of man would be left far behind. Thus the first ultraintelligent machine is the last invention that man need ever make, provided that the machine is docile enough to tell us how to keep it under control."
The singularity describes the hypothetical point at which the intelligence of a system is so far advanced that the future can no longer be reliably predicted or controlled. The term is often compared to a technological “frontier” beyond which our understanding of the consequences of advanced AI dissolves. This is seen as problematic because AI could possess an intelligence that is no longer compatible with human logic or morality. It is important to emphasize that I. J. Good assumed during his lifetime that the probability of the intelligence explosion leading to the singularity was more likely than not. He wrote in 1963:
“It is more probable than not that, within the twentieth century, an ultraintelligent machine will be built and that it will be the last invention that man need make, since it will lead to an "intelligence explosion." [1]
To this day, numerous parties repeatedly refer to key aspects. These include irreversibility, unpredictability for humans and the perceived loss of control. The technology company IBM has written the following about the Singularity:
“The technological singularity” is a theoretical scenario in which technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, culminating in profound and unpredictable changes to human civilization. Theoretically, this phenomenon is driven by the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), which surpasses the cognitive abilities of humans and is capable of self-improvement. (...) The term “singularity” in this context comes from mathematics and refers to a point at which existing models fail and understanding of relationships is lost. This describes an era in which machines not only keep pace with human intelligence, but significantly surpass it, setting in motion a cycle of self-reinforcing technological evolution.” [2]
It is essential that, according to the theoretical assumption, “such advances could progress so quickly that humans would not be able to predict, mitigate or stop the process” [3]. In other words, artificial (super)intelligence completely transcends the human being and it is no longer possible for humans to exercise any control or understanding over this artificial entity. It would be a first in the history of mankind to create something that “machines could create even more advanced versions of themselves, could transport humanity into a new reality in which humans are no longer the most capable beings” and at the same time can act completely autonomously.
Another significant contribution to the singularity debate was made by Stanislaw Ulam, a mathematician and physicist who studied complex, self-replicating systems. Together with the renowned scientist John von Neumann, Ulam researched so-called cellular automata - simple, mathematical models for self-replicating and potentially self-improving systems. Even though Ulam and von Neumann did not primarily work on artificial intelligence themselves, their studies provided crucial insights into how machines could potentially develop and replicate themselves in future scenarios, which is considered the foundation for today's singularity theories.
Finally, John von Neumann coined one of the earliest formulations of the singularity concept by pointing to a technological “point of no return”. Von Neumann envisioned a future in which technological progress would be so rapid and complex that human imagination and adaptability would reach their limits. He saw the Singularity as a profound change in the world in which humans may no longer be the primary actors in their own development.
More recently, Ray Kurzweil, a leading thinker in the field of artificial intelligence, has further popularized the singularity. Kurzweil argues that technological progress follows exponential growth - for example, Moore's Law, which states that computing power doubles every two years. According to Kurzweil, machines could soon reach a threshold that enables them to improve themselves. This moment, which he describes as an “intelligent explosion”, would open up an era for humanity in which machines exceed our capabilities and drive technological evolution independently of us.
Vernor Vinge, a mathematics professor and science fiction author, also sees the Singularity as a major turning point in human history. In Vinge's view, the creation of a superhuman intelligence will change society so fundamentally that it cannot continue to exist as we understand it today. A once self-improving AI could face obstacles according to Vinge, but these would not be insurmountable, which would further accelerate the singularity process.
Finally, in this discussion, researcher Roman Yampolskiy warns of the potential risks posed by the singularity. He sees in the singularity the danger that a super-intelligent AI could carry out actions that contradict human values or security needs. For Yampolskiy, the challenge lies in controlling or directing these sophisticated machines, as such an AI would develop its own priorities and possibly act autonomously.
Although the perspectives of these theorists differ in their focus, they are united by a common motif: the question of whether machines could surpass human intelligence and redefine our understanding of progress, autonomy and control.
If one were to summarize the term singularity from the different concepts into a few key points, they would be the following:
1) A future point at which AI becomes more intelligent than humans.
2) AI can continue to develop independently (positive feedback loop)
3) Technology could develop very quickly (exponential development)
4) Possible far-reaching, unforeseen effects on society.
5) Possibly uncontrollable for humans
